A Tale of Two Kitties
Three years ago, Soleil and Brulee were
born to a feral mother who died when they were kittens. Things looked up
when a man named Jack adopted Soleil, and another
neighbor began caring for Brulee.
But when Jack moved out of state last
year, he left Soleil behind. Around the same time, Brulee’s adoptive
family brought home an untrained dog who attacked Brulee, sending the
terrified cat permanently out the front door.
Fortunately the duo quickly found
Nancy’s nearby feral cat feeding station. In short
order,
they were trapped, neutered, inoculated and on the mend. And while they
are in no rush to leave Nancy’s care, these happy, healthy, wonderful
cats are available for adoption into a loving, permanent home.
There are an estimated 4 million feral
cats in L.A. TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) is the most humane, effective
means to manage the otherwise burgeoning homeless cat population. Nancy
has effectively employed TNR more than 30 times, thus preventing the
births of potentially thousands of homeless cats.
“Some ferals can actually be
socialized,” she says. “I’ve placed a number of them in homes. I have
three former ferals myself. And you know, based on the number of pet
pictures I receive from people who have adopted rescued cats or dogs
from me, I’d have to say that humans benefit as much as the animals do.”
